Following the critical success of the powerHouse Portfolio Review in 2005 and 2006, and the powerHouse Publishing Workshops in Summer, 2005 and 2006, powerHouse Books, the premiere conceptual publisher of art photography and innovative illustrated books, will host its third annual Portfolio Review on Sunday, March 18, 2007.


The powerHouse Portfolio Review is a platform for all levels of aspiring and professional photographers to present their body of work to be reviewed and critiqued by leading experts in the fields of photography, art, media, and advertising and to receive guidance and mentorship for future artistic and commercial career development. The previous Portfolio Reviews in 2005 and 2006 were astounding successes: with over 100 attendees and a 37-member panel of experts that included a range of publishers, photo editors, commercial photography agents, gallery directors, photography critics, art book packagers, and designers.

The 3nd Annual powerHouse Portfolio Review is a one-day event to be held on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at the powerHouse Arena, located at 37 Main Street, in the centre of Dumbo’s vibrant neighborhood, Brooklyn. Each attendee will be assigned five one-on-one reviews with members of our panel of renowned photography professionals. We will do our best to select your reviewers in accordance with your interests, as specified on the registration form. Each review will take up to 20 minutes.

Nathan Benn

Director of Marketing for Orange Logic

Orange Logic is an internet services company that manages digital image libraries. Benn is a trustee of the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and

Film, chairs the Education and Interpretation Committee, and serves on the museum's Photography Acquisition Committee. He was the director of Magnum Photos Inc., the prestigious agency of documentary photographers, from 2000 through 2002. Benn was a photographer with National Geographic from 1972 to 1991 and left National Geographic to develop Picture Network International Ltd. (PNI), the first e-commerce service for stock photography. Benn has worked with photographers to produce acclaimed photographic books including New York September 11 by Magnum Photographers, RFK Funeral Train by Paul Fusco, and Baseball by David Levinthal.

 

 

Natalie Bertaux

Consultant and art buyer for MODCo creative design firm

Bertaux was formerly a photo agent at a portrait-based agency. There she represented legendary photographers such as Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld, and Larry Sultan. Bertaux has worked with creative directors on a variety of fashion campaigns and with Helmut Newton on his ad campaigns.

 

 

John Berthot

President, Focus

Focus is an agency that consults photographers on various aspects of the business, including portfolio presentation, art buyers, negotiating fees/contracts, protecting copyright, and licensing images for stock. Berthot has previously worked as an agent for Stockland Martel and Utopia, as a sales director for WireImage, as an advertising/corporate director at Magnum Photos, and as a sales director at Photonica.

 

 

Alex Burnard

Creative Director, Crispin Porter + Bogusky

CP+B is hailed as the top creative agency in the US, and in the world. Burnard’s work for GT Bicycles, Molson beer, the launch of MINI, IKEA, and several other clients has left him with a ton of awards from basically every award show that exists. During his time at CP+B the agency has been named “Agency of the Year” four times. Today, Burnard is a co-creative director on the Coca-Cola Zero, ask.com, Shimano, Giro, and Bell Helmet accounts.

Brian Clamp

In 2000, after completing a Master of Arts degree in Critical Studies in Modern Art at Columbia University, he opened ClampArt, a gallery in Chelsea specializing in modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on photography. ClampArt mounts eight to ten exhibitions per year featuring the work of emerging and mid-career photographers.  For eight years prior to opening ClampArt, Brian Paul Clamp served as the director of a gallery on Manhattan’s Upper East Side that specializes in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American art.  Aside from exhibitions at his own gallery space, Clamp has curated numerous photography shows at various venues throughout the United States and has reviewed photographers’ portfolios on dozens of panels over the past several years.  Brian Paul Clamp is the author of numerous publications on American art to date and also occasionally contributes written work to various art periodicals.

 

 

Song Chong

Advertising and Corporate Assignments, Magnum Photos

Chong runs the special projects department at Magnum Photos, focusing on advertising and corporate assignments as well as special projects including the inaugural Magnum Festival: Celebrating the Art of Documentary. She has been working in New York City's photography world for the last ten years as an agent, producer, and curator.

Bill Davenport

Partner, producer, and part of the spiritual core of the agency Wieden + Kennedy

During his eighteen years of ad glory, he has produced or supervised many of the most famous commercials of the eighties and nineties, including work for Nike, Microsoft, Coke, Honda Scooters, Miller, and Sears. After becoming an agency partner, Bill combined his experience and the interest in the industry to start up and lead W+K Entertainment. Since its inception in 2000, W+K Entertainment has helped guide the agency (and its clients) to new forms of communications and promotion. Bill’s goal is to tell brand stories and connect with people in a fresh and compelling manner.

 

Thierry Demont

Demont is a dealer of photography and art photography advisory and curator of

exhibitions (including print sales and special projects), including Francois Halard and Mathieu Bernard Reymond’s first US solo show in 2006. He exclusively represents William Claxton. Demont is also a Committee member of Friends Without A Border and a member of the board of the International Center of Photography.


 

Katrina Doerner

Private dealer

Doerner specializes in early to mid-twentieth century photographic prints with an emphasis on documentary and humanist photography. As a former photographer by trade and with twelve years of combined experience in galleries and private dealership, Doerner has a keen understanding of the needs of both artist and gallery. Doerner is based in Brooklyn and represents artists such as Dimitri Baltermants, Horace Bristol, Larry Fink, and Erika Stone, among others. 

 

 

Michael Foley

Director, Foley Gallery
Foley has worked with the Fraenkel Gallery, the Howard Greenberg Gallery, and the Yancey Richardson Gallery. He has been a consultant for The Gap, Inc. on several of their sponsored photography exhibits and has exhibited his own work in San Francisco, New York, and Italy.

 

 

Stephen Frailey

Thelma Golden

Director and Chief Curator, The Studio Museum of Harlem

Golden began her career as a curator at the Studio Museum in 1987 before joining the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1988 where she organized many notable exhibitions, including the 1993 Biennale. Known for her support and championship of emerging artists, Ms. Golden created a site-specific commissioning program for the Whitney’s branch museum at Philip Morris (now Altria). After a decade at the Whitney, Ms. Golden worked as Special Projects Curator for renowned contemporary art collectors Peter Norton and Eileen Harris Norton before joining The Studio Museum in Harlem.

Golden is also an active guest curator, writer, lecturer, and advisor and board member at Creative Time in New York and inIVA in London and serves on the Visiting Committee of the Smith College Museum of Art.

Catherine Johnson

Catherine Johnson is the Chair of the Photography Committee and serves on the Board of Directors at the National Arts Club. She began her career in photography representing British photographer Norman Parkinson in North America. She is the editor of numerous books and a collector of contemporary and vintage photography.

 

 

Anthony LaSala

LaSala has worked for PDN since 1997, writing and overseeing several columns for the publication. He has helped make the international magazine the “bible” of the photography industry. A nominee for “Photography Editor of the Year” at the 2003 and 2004 International Photography Awards, he is also the author of World’s Top Photographers: Nudes.

George Pitts

In 2006, Pitts was awarded The Lucie Award for “Picture Editor Of The Year.”

From 1993-2004, he was the Director of Photography at Vibe magazine. He is also a photographer, painter, and writer. His paintings, drawings, and photography have been shown in numerous exhibitions in the United States, including New York. As Director of Photography at Vibe, he received numerous honors in photography including The SPD Gold Award in 1994 and 2004; an Alfred Eisenstaedt Award nomination for Photo Essays in 1998; selection in American Photography volumes 10 to 19; and received three National Magazine Award (ASME) nominations in photography: 1994, 1995, and 2001. In 2001, he served as one of the judges for ICP’s “Eugene Smith Award” in photojournalism and was on the Nominating Board for ICP’s  2001 “Infinity Awards.”

Previously she was a curator of photography at P.S. 1, the Institute for Art and Urban Resources (1980–1984). Squiers has written essays for a wide variety of publications, including Artforum, The New York Times, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Parkett, Art in America, and Aperture, as well as several books and catalogues.

 

 

Amy Steigbigel

As Director of Photography for Getty Images in New York City, Amy Steigbigel

leads a team of art directors, photo editors, and freelance photographers in both sourcing and producing creative imagery to meet the creative strategy of the company. Steigbigel has held a number of key positions in both the commercial and fine art realms of photography. Most recently she was the Director of Photography of Details magazine and co-founder of the Wallspace Gallery in New York City in 2002.

 

 

Dorothee Walliser

Filipachi Publishing is the book publishing division of HFM. From 1999 to 2002 she was in charge of the US division of Assouline, and prior to that she served as the editorial director of Editions du Collectionneur, Paris. Barry Winiker

Winiker is curator of Pfizer, Inc. and responsible for a collection of 6,000 works on paper, multiple galleries within the company’s New York headquarters, and educational programming for employees. Prior to that he served as assistant registrar at The Museum of Modern Art as well as curator for the corporate collection of the Seagram Company.
