DESIGN INTERN

Applicants will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. Available September - December 2010.

Nature of Work
Design/Production includes:

• Pre-production: scanning and retouching art, preparing dummies and other salesmaterials
• Assistance on design of books, catalogs, invites, announcements, advertisements, sales- materials
• Assisting on book design: layout and pre-production
• Updating and archiving digital art

Learning opportunity

• Inside view of book publishing and the opportunity to work closely with key personnel in Design, Production, Sales, Marketing, Publicity, Promotions, Gallery and Retail Sales
• Interacting with authors and artists, suppliers, and media

Skills Required

• Basic Design skills
• Quark XPress, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
• Basic knowledge of web design would be great but not required

SOCIAL MEDIA / WEB DESIGN INTERN

Part time, stipend available. 18-20 Hours per week

Assistance in maintenance of website content, web analytics, web development, and construction of layouts/templates.

Skills Required
• Basic HTML
• Basic understanding of PHP/CSS/XML
• Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Illustrator skills a plus
• Flash skills are helpful

MARKETING INTERN

powerHouse Books is currently seeking a well-organized marketing intern to assist with organizing innovative campaigns for authors and books. Projects will largely focus upon grassroots research for a given book and author with a specific type of personal platform and book subject matter.

This position will require that you work a minimum of 24 hours per week, onsite (our offices are located in DUMBO, Brooklyn). This is an unpaid internship; however, the supervisor strongly believes and is deeply invested in educating interns in the business and often they have moved on to careers in the publishing industry.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Executing internet research which will lead to grassroots, targeted marketing campaigns.
• Researching corporations and organizations.
• Writing press releases and queries.
• Supporting project management with some general administrative duties.

BOOKSTORE ASSOCIATE OR BOOKSTORE MANAGER


The powerhouse Arena, a bookstore, gallery, and event space in the Dumbo area of Brooklyn, is looking for a passionate, self-motivated bookseller and/or bookstore manager who has a strong interest in photography, art, and design. Our 5,000 sf book boutique space focuses on photography and illustrated books, non-fiction, and children's books.

We are looking for a dedicated, sales-driven individual with a strong work ethic, maybe a bit of style, a welcoming demeanor, and a friendly personality. Experience in event programming, bookstore ordering, or bookstore management a plus.

GALLERY & BOOKSTORE INTERN

The Gallery & Bookstore Intern reports to the Gallery Director and is primarily responsible for: preparing & promoting exhibitions and book signing events; bookstore management; gallery and event preparations, as well as assistance in organizing a summer workshop series.

Responsibilities Include:
Assist in preparing and working at in-house and offsite events—including gallery openings, book signings, launch parties, and other special events. Maintaining contacts and workshop databases. Maintain inventory for office and bookstore.

Requirements Include:
Computer skills: Microsoft Office & Excel. Familiarity with Mac required. Mission-passionate with an interest in art, photography, and book publishing.

Salary:
We offer a small stipend for long-term (6 mo+), full-time internships.

ARENA INTERN

The Arena Intern will assist in preparing & promoting all Arena events.

Responsibilities Include:
• Events:
- Assist in preparing and working at in-house and offsite events—including gallery openings, book signings, launch parties, and other special events.
- Helping to maintain inventory of retail materials and gather all necessary items related to an event.
-Help with the preparing of art and installation for exhibitions
• Promotion:
- Dissemination of all press and marketing materials including physical packages, electronic art, evites, and sales materials.
• Assist in research and coordination of materials for future events:
- Research sponsorships: alcohol, music, and magazines
- Research entertainment for events (DJs, live performances, other various media)
- Research retail items

Requirements:
• Computer skills - Microsoft Office & Excel. Familiarity with Mac required.
• Effective, engaging communicator
• Excellent writing skills
• Multi-tasker
• Solid-problem solving skills
• High energy
• Self-disciplined and resourceful
• Mission-passionate with an interest in art, photography, and book publishing
