“The pictures in this book have a lot to do with 21st century man dealing with his own imagery.”
—Calvin Klein, from the Foreword to
Exhibitionism

During his long career and successful career, Christopher Makos has photographed the most beloved icons of our time including Mick Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor, Salvador Dali, John Lennon, and Andy Warhol. In his new collection of his photographs, Exhibitionism, Makos now focuses his lens on an icon of a different sort: The male body.

Featuring fifteen digital prints, ranging from brilliantly crisp black-and-whites to luscious four-colors to softly muted sepia-tones, Exhibitionism emerged out of a provocative exhibition staged by Makos at the Calvin Klein flagship store in New York in 2001. The result is a completely unique, visually stunning and thought-provoking examination of the human male in its individual and universal form. The result is an exhibition every bit as sexy, intriguing, and daring as the man who created it.

Christopher Makos was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and grew up in California before moving to Paris to study architecture and later to work as an apprentice to Man Ray. Since the early 1970s he has developed a boldly graphic style of photojournalism, documenting the male ego as a signature style in all his work. During the 1980s he was a seminal figure in the New York art scene, where he was responsible for introducing the work of both Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring to Andy Warhol. It was Warhol who called Makos “the most modern photographer in America.” His photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums internationally, with works shown at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. His images have appeared in countless magazines and newspapers worldwide, including Interview, Rolling Stone, House & Garden, New York Magazine, Esquire, Genre, and People. He is the author of several important books, including his most recent, Warhol Memoir (Charta, 2004). Makos lives in New York. For more information about the author, please visit
