Rocking on tour with Americas heavy metal superstarsKiss, Poison, Iron Maiden, Slaughter, Ted Nugent, Dokken, and Cinderelllaphotographer David Yellen captures the classically trashy style of the headbangers, metalheads, burnouts and self-styled fanatics, tailgating in anticipation of the show or hanging by the backstage door, hoping to make it to the promised land of the bands dressing rooms.
In Too Fast For Love, Yellen travels from Michigan to Miami, from Pennsylvania to Omaha, to explore a moment frozen in hairspray, bleached perms, mullets, denim cut-offs, spandex cat suits, more pleather than you can imagine, leopard, tiger, and snake prints, ripped fishnets, bare breasts and hairy chests, G-strings and platforms, pierced nipples and tongues, studded belts and bracelets, press-on nails, raccoon eyes and hyper lip-liner. Bang your head to this!
DAVID YELLEN:
David Yellen was born in 1972 in Bayside, Queens. He graduated from SUNY Purchase, where he studied under John Cohen (There is No Eye, powerHouse Books, 2001) and Jed Devine. In 2000, Yellen traveled across America to relive a part of his pasta time of rebellion and innocence, a time when the women had big hair and rock stars stood on stage as if they were Greek gods. He traveled back to the glory days of the Hair Bands. Over the course of three months, he drove his red Nissan 300 ZX over 30,000 miles to capture the faces of heavy metal fans. Yellen exhibited works from Too Fast for Love in 2001 at the Visionaire gallery in New York City. Yellens photographs have appeared in publications like The New York Times Magazine, Time, Spin, Rolling Stone, XXL, ESPN, Dutch, Nylon, and V. He lives and works in New York City.
