Nine Fragments from the Delta of Venus
and other Erotic Prints
February 13March 20, 2004
In conjunction with the publication of
Fragments from the Delta of Venus by Judy Chicago,
The powerHouse Gallery exhibited a portfolio of nine of Chicago's etchings,
inspired by the most evocative stories of famed erotic writer Anaïs Nin.
Adding further to their ambrosial nature, the suite of intaglios are available grouped in a candy box. The set is, in the artist's own words, "intended as a pleasurable but entirely non-caloric gift for one's loveror for oneself."

Some years ago, I was invited to write an essay about the writer Anaïs Nin. In preparation for the essay, I reviewed some of her writing and for the first time I read the Delta of Venus, a group of erotic stories. Embedded within them was some of the earliest erotic writing from a womans perspective. I decided to select some fragments from these stories and create a series if images that might be best described as visual analogs to what are extremely evocative phrases.
