People make pilgrimages to experience the brief colorful change of season but usually take for granted the part each individual leaf plays in this brilliant panorama. Fall is an exhibition of photographs documenting the vivid and brilliant colors of the autumnal foliage. Photographer Christopher Griffith has discovered an innovative technique for imprinting the structural and textual elements of nature. Fantastically backlit, the glowing colors are transmitted through the leaves and onto the walls of this exhibition.

The idea for Fall came to Griffith while he was living in a brownstone in New York City. “It was mid-November,” Griffith recalls, “and the ivy on the side of the building seemed to be literally glowing outside my window. I picked a single leaf off the vine and saw that depending on the angle of light refracted through and the position of the leaf, I could see the most incredible textures and colors.” Intrigued by this discovery, Griffith spent the next few days experimenting with ways to capture this effect on film. That was four years ago. He has now perfected the technique of photographing the leaves’ brilliant colors after transporting them to his studio and before they wilt or turn brown— quite a feat, as many of these leaves were collected and transported personally by Griffith from hundreds of miles away.
